Beijing Anzhen Hospital was founded in April 1984 with the vision of creating a premier hospital facility in China that could provide a full range of medical services, while advancing China’s capabilities and technologies in treating heart and lung diseases. Anzhen Hospital, in combination with the Beijing Institute of Heart, Lung & Blood Vessel Diseases, founded in 1981, forms a superior medical entity focused on integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, prevention, and international exchange.

Anzhen Hospital covers the full spectrum of medical disciplines with distinguished physicians and a broad technological base. Currently, the hospital employs a staff of 2300 people, including nearly 300 high-ranking or senior professionals. The hospital consists of 39 clinical and technical departments with 1062 beds. The newly-completed Cardiac Surgery Wing is equipped with the most modern of facilities including 20 operating theaters with an advanced Laminar Flow Air System and 55 postoperative ICU beds, providing excellent medical services for patients suffering from heart, lung, and blood vessel illnesses.

Anzhen Hospital places special focus on cardiac surgery, cardiology, pediatric cardiology, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, and respiratory medicine. The Department of Cardiac Surgery ranks first in the country in the number of procedures performed, with 4000 heart-treatment procedures each year, 1500 of which are coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The Department of Cardiology completes 8000 cases of coronary angiogram annually, among which more than 3000 are angioplasty cases (PTCA), also the forefront in the country. Anzhen hospital is the only facility in China that can perform heart, lung, liver, or kidney transplants.

The staff of Anzhen hospital has operated under the leadership of three distinguished presidents: Presidents Wu Yingkai, Sun Yanqing, and current president Zhang Zhaoguang. The hospital leadership keeps close tabs on the “pulse” of the world’s medical advancement and is actively advocating innovation and development. They place special emphasis on the group effects of talent and teamwork, working together for the benefit of the patient. As the national base for training specialists in heart, lung, and blood vessel diseases, Anzhen Hospital has created an echelon of talent that is the finest of its kind in China. Many of the physicians have studied abroad and are trained in some of the most advanced technologies available in the world today.

In 1987, Anzhen Hospital became the clinical teaching hospital of the Capital Medical University (CMU); later, in 1997, it became an official affiliate of the university.
